Science

Science encompasses the three discipline areas, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. All students must sit a combination of the three areas.

 Year 11 GCSE (2017 leavers)

The majority of current Year 11 will take 2 Science GCSEs in Core and Additional Science. This includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics in equal amounts. In addition to this, an Investigative Skills Assessment is required for both Core and Additional. They sit 6 exams at the end of Year 11.

A small group of students sit 3 separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition to this, an Investigative Skills Assessment (ISA) is required for each science. They sit 9 exams at the end of year 11, in 6 sittings.

Year 10 GCSE (2018 leavers onwards)

The majority of current Year 10 will take a double weighted AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy. This includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics but there is no coursework. They sit 6 exams at the end of Year 11. They will receive one double weighted grade from 1-1 to 9-9 which counts as 2 GCSEs. 9-9 is the highest grade and intermediate grades will be given in the form 6-7, which is half way between Grade 6 and Grade 7.

A small group of students sit 3 separate GCSEs in AQA Biology, AQA Chemistry and AQA Physics and there is no coursework. This course is only offered to set 1. They sit 6 longer exams at the end of year 11. Each exam is graded from 1-9, where 9 is the highest grade.

Assessment

Every unit is assessed using examination questions. At the end of every term, an assessment is completed by all students which reviews content covered in the term and in previous terms.

Firefly/Extended Learning

Firefly has many resources for students to use to enable them to access revision tools and to support them to make expected progress.

Homework is set on firefly to ensure all students and parents/carers have a record of what the homework is and when it is due.

Gojimo is a useful free APP that allows students to test themselves by answering questions. The APP also lets the students know if they were right or wrong and then an explanation of what the correct answer should be and why.

Extra –curricular activities

KS3 Stem Club runs every Thursday led by the Science team. STEM ambassadors from Staffordshire University also attend to offer support to students and allow them to see how STEM can be applied to new situations.

Revision sessions run prior to the examinations in May/June. Tea and toast will be provided for the students to support engagement with the revision available.
